The name GEORGE BANCROFT (1800-1891) is from the American born at Worcester, MA who graduated from Harvard University in 1817. After James K. Polk won the Presidential election with Bancroft's support, he rewarded Bancroft by appointing him Secretary of the Navy. Most notably, Bancroft established the Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD, and strongly supported the work of the Naval Observatory. He went on to become minister to Great Britain and Berlin. He also had considerable work published concerning the History of the United States.
