Fleet Admiral Chester William Nimitz - his first submarine was USS Plunger (A-1). He successively commanded USS Snapper, USS Narwal and USS Skipjack until 1912. He hauled down his flag at Pearl Harbor on 26 Nov. 1945, and on 15 December relieved Fleet Admiral E.J. King as Chief of Naval Operations for a term of two years.
