1908 - PCU OCTOPUS (later C-1) (SS-9) commissioned USS OCTOPUS at Fore River Shipbuilding, Quincy, MA; Lieutenant C. E. Courtney commanding.
1932 - USS R-5 (SS-82) decommissioned at Philadelphia Navy Yard, Philadelphia, PA.
1938 - PCU SKIPJACK (SS-184) commissioned USS SKIPJACK (SS-184) at Electric Boat Company, Groton, CT.
1941 - PCU GRAYBACK (SS-208) commissioned USS GRAYBACK (SS-208) at the Electric Boat Company, Groton, CT.
1942 - USS PLUNGER (SS-179) made the first "up-the-kilt" shot of the Pacific portion of WWII. She sank the Unkia Maru #5.
1942 - PCU TUNNY (SS-282) launched at Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, CA.
1944 - PCU SPIKEFISH (SS-404) commissioned USS SPIKEFISH (SS-404) at Portsmouth Navy Yard, Kittery, ME.
1945 - USS NAUTILUS (ex V-6) (SS-168) decommissioned with a bottle of champagne over the forward 6" gun at Philadelphia, PA.
1950 - USS BARBERO (SS-317) decommissioned; laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet.
1950 - PCU HARDER (SS-568) keel laid as HARDER at the Electric Boat Company, Groton, CT.
1960 - USS SEALION (SS-315) second decommissioning at Portsmouth, NH.
1964 - USS BARBERO (SS-317) second decommissioning.
1967 - Ex-DENTUDA (AGSS-335) placed out of service after having been reclassified as Auxiliary Research Submarine (AGSS-335) in 1962.
1967 - PCU FLYING FISH (SSN-673) keel laid as FLYING FISH at the Electric Boat Division, General Dynamics Corporation, Groton, CT.
1968 - USS SALMON (AGSS-573) redesignated Attack Submarine (SS-573).
1968 - USS SCORPION (SSN-589) struck form the Naval Vessel Register.
1972 - USS CAIMAN (SS-323) decommissioned; transferred (sold) to the Republic of Turkey and commissioned in the Turkish Navy as TGC Dumlupinar (S-339) at Ballast Point, San Diego, CA.
1976 - USS HALIBUT (SSGN-587) decommissioned.
1987 - In late June or early July, the Trident submarine USS NEVADA (SSBN-733) suffered a breakdown while conducting routine operations following the improper installation of a power transmission gear during a recent February to April maintenance stop at the Newport News Shipyard, VA. The damage was estimated at several million dollars, and caused NEVADA to cancel a special call at her new homeport of Bangor, WA. In response to queries, the Navy said "The safety of the ship and crew was never an issue and the ship is continuing its operations."
1990 - PCU MIAMI (SSN-755) commissioned USS MIAMI (SSN-755) at the Electric Boat Division, General Dynamics Corporation, Groton, CT.
1992 - Ex-HADDO (SSN-604) disposition complete by Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program (NPSSRP) at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, WA.
1992 - Ex-JACK (SSN-605) disposition complete by Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program (NPSSRP) at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, WA.
1997 - Ex-SNOOK (SSN-592) disposition complete by Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program (NPSSRP) at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, WA.
2003 - Ex-BOSTON (SSN-703) disposition complete by Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program (NPSSRP) at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, WA.
2004 - PCU NORTH CAROLINA (SSN-777) , the fourth Virginia-class submarine, began the process of becoming an active Navy vessel. The first group of North Carolina’s crew (Alpha manning) reported for duty and started learning every aspect of the Virginia class.
